Expired ITP: what happens to your car?

If the police stop you

Driving a car with an expired ITP is an offence punished with a fine, and so is driving a car whose registration is suspended (Emergency Ordinance 195/2002, art. 102). The police keep the registration certificate and give you a replacement document with the right to drive for 15 days (art. 112). You get the certificate back once the suspension ends, that is, after a new inspection.

The amount of the fine is in the law; we don't list it here, because it changes.

Worth knowing

When the roadworthiness certificate expires the registration is automatically suspended and the car loses the right to be on the road — it is not just a missing piece of paper. Check the simple things yourself first: bulbs, wipers, washer fluid, tyres, the first-aid kit, the triangles and the extinguisher.

How often does a car need the ITP test in Romania?

For cars the inspection is every 2 years — but every year once the car is 12 years old or more, and a new car gets its first one at 3 years. It is done on the spot, and anyone can bring the car in, not only the owner.
