Short guides on documents, your car and your home
How do you check whether a car has valid RCA insurance?
On aida.info.ro, under “Verificare polita RCA” (RCA policy check): you choose the registration number or the VIN, enter the date you want checked and press “Cauta” (search). The form asks for no account and no payment. The database is kept by BAAR, the professional association of the insurers that sell RCA, Romania's compulsory motor insurance, and the Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF) links to the same page.
Checking RCA, step by step
- Open the “Verificare polita RCA” page on aida.info.ro.
- Choose the search criterion: the chassis number (VIN) or the registration number.
- The registration number is typed in the form B100BAR, with no spaces between letters and digits. The VIN has 17 characters, digits or letters only, with no spaces; on old vehicles it can have fewer.
- Fill in “Data pentru care se face verificarea” (the date the check is made for).
- Tick that you have read and agree to the site's privacy policy, tick “Nu sunt robot” (I am not a robot) and press “Cauta”.
The site says the information shown is what the insurers have entered in the database.
When it can be useful
A few situations (the examples are ours, not the site's):
- Before you buy a second-hand car.
- After an accident, for the other driver's car: the form has a field for the date the check is made for.
- After you have bought your policy, to see that the registration number and the VIN were entered correctly.
Who keeps the database
AIDA stands for “Administrare Istoric Date Asigurări Auto” (motor insurance data history). The site is the property of BAAR (Biroul Asigurătorilor de Autovehicule din România, the bureau of Romania's motor insurers). BAAR is not a state institution: the law defines it as a professional, independent and autonomous association of all the insurance companies entitled to sell RCA insurance in Romania (Law 132/2017, art. 32).
The same article gives BAAR the task of developing and administering the database that records RCA contracts, including publishing data about RCA policies.
The Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF) has on the front page of its site the link “Interogare polițe RCA” (RCA policy query), which leads to the same page on aida.info.ro.
If the data do not match
For any mismatch between what the page shows and what your documents say, the site refers you to the insurer that issued the policy. The insurers' contact details are on aida.info.ro.
