The Austrian vignette: where do you buy it, and which types are there?

Who needs a vignette

All cars, motorbikes and camper vans with a technically permissible maximum laden mass of up to 3.5 tonnes must properly display a toll sticker, or have bought a digital vignette in time, when they drive onto a motorway or expressway.

Which types exist

• 1 day: digital only; available only in the ASFINAG online toll shop or the ASFINAG app
• 10 days
• 2 months
• 1 year

The 10-day, 2-month and 1-year vignettes are available from more than 6,000 outlets in Austria and abroad, in the ASFINAG online toll shop and in the app.

Mind the 18 days

For the 1-day and 10-day vignettes you can choose immediate validity in the ASFINAG online toll shop. Because of consumer protection rules, 2-month and annual vignettes bought online are valid from the 18th day after the purchase at the earliest.

If you buy the digital vignette from a distributor, at a tollbooth or from a vending machine, the 18-day period does not apply: it is valid immediately.

Sticker or digital vignette

The digital vignette is tied to the licence plate. When you buy it, you enter the country of registration, the licence plate of the vehicle, your e-mail address and the start of the validity period.

The traditional toll sticker is offered for the last time in 2026. From 2027 only the digital vignette will be available.

How to check that it is valid

ASFINAG has a checking page: you enter the licence plate and its country of registration and see whether the car has a valid digital vignette and for which periods.

Where no vignette is needed, and what it does not cover

ASFINAG writes that, at least temporarily, the vignette requirement has exceptions on four stretches:

• A 1 Westautobahn, between the national border at Walserberg and the Salzburg Nord junction
• A 12 Inntalautobahn, between the national border at Kufstein and the Kufstein-Süd junction
• A 14 Rheintal/Walgau Autobahn, between the national border at Hörbranz and the Hohenems junction
• A 26 Linzer Autobahn, with a condition set out on the ASFINAG page
