The Hungarian e-vignette: where do you buy it, and which types are there?
Hungary's vignette is electronic (e-matrica). Since 1 January 2026 toll collection has been done by the Toll Division of Hungarian Public Roads Nonprofit Plc., which took over from the former National Toll Payment Services. Its official online shop is ematrica.nemzetiutdij.hu. For the whole country there are four types: daily, 10-day, monthly and annual. You buy it before you enter the toll road.
Who needs one, and which category your vehicle is in
The e-vignette system covers motorcycles, passenger cars and recreational vehicles (and their trailers), as well as trucks and buses with a maximum authorised total mass of up to 3.5 tonnes. The category is set by what the registration certificate says:
- D1: passenger cars of up to 3.5 tonnes, with up to 7 seats including the driver, and trailers towed by them, provided the vehicle category field of the registration certificate shows M1 or M1G
- D1M: motorcycles
- D2: all motor vehicles that do not belong to another category. If the registration certificate shows N1 or N1G, the vehicle is in category D2 whatever its seating capacity; the same goes for vehicles with 8 seats or more
- U: a trailer towed by a category D2 vehicle (for example, a trailer or a caravan)
For motorhomes and caravans, the operator has a category selection guide on its site.
Which types exist, and how long each one lasts
- Daily: valid on the day of purchase, from the exact time of purchase. Bought in advance, it is valid from midnight to midnight on the day you chose.
- 10-day (called “weekly”): the starting day plus 9 more consecutive days.
- Monthly: from the starting day until the 24th hour of the same day (by number) in the following month (or until midnight on the last day of the month).
- Annual: from the time of purchase until midnight on 31 January of the following year.
- Regional (county), annual: valid on the toll expressways of the county you choose, also until midnight on 31 January of the following year.
- M1 regional, annual: the one for 2026 covers the toll expressways of Pest, Fejér, Komárom-Esztergom and Győr-Moson-Sopron counties.
Daily, 10-day and monthly vignettes are valid from the time of purchase, unless you choose a different starting date.
Buy before you enter the toll road
Toll sections may only be used with a valid vignette, that is, you need to buy it before you enter them. The operator writes that bona fide road users who entered the toll network by mistake have 60 minutes from entry to buy one.
When you buy, check the registration number, the country code, the vehicle category and the validity period on the counterfoil. The operator asks you to keep the counterfoil or the confirmation message for 3 years from the last day of the vignette's validity.
Where to buy it officially
From the operator's official online shop, ematrica.nemzetiutdij.hu. There are resellers as well; for problems with what you bought from them, the operator refers you to the reseller.
How to check that it is valid
On the operator's “Query valid e-vignettes” page you can see whether a vehicle has a valid vignette at the time of the query. No registration is needed: you enter the country code and the licence plate number. The query does not show vignettes already bought but not yet valid, and it does not replace the counterfoil or the confirmation message.
