The Bulgarian e-vignette: where do you buy it, and which types are there?

In short

Bulgaria's vignette is electronic: nothing goes on the windscreen. It is run by the National Toll Administration, a unit of Bulgaria's Road Infrastructure Agency, and the official site is bgtoll.bg. For vehicles of up to 3.5 tonnes there are six types: one-day, weekend, weekly, monthly, three-month and annual.

Which types exist

  • One-day
  • Weekend
  • Weekly
  • Monthly
  • Three-month
  • Annual

The official pages we read do not say from what time to what time each type is valid. Check the conditions on bgtoll.bg before you buy.

For the trailer of a light vehicle there is a separate vignette, when the total mass of the combination exceeds 3.5 tonnes.

It is electronic: nothing to stick on

With the e-vignette there is no longer any need to put a paper sticker on the windscreen. During a roadside check, the owners and users of vehicles are not obliged to present a document proving that the vignette was bought.

Where to buy it officially

  • On the website www.bgtoll.bg (the buy button opens web.bgtoll.bg)
  • Through the BGTOLL mobile app
  • At self-checkout terminals in retail locations
  • At the counter, at points of sale and at the regional road administrations of the Road Infrastructure Agency (listed in the Bulgarian version of the page)

Mind the address: the site also has a page in Romanian, but in one place it gives a different address from the rest of the site. The right one, where the buy buttons lead too, is bgtoll.bg.

How to check that it is valid

The operator writes that the validity of a purchased e-vignette can be verified at any time, on the site and at the self-service terminals. On the site, the page is called “Vignette check”.

If the plate was entered wrongly

If, when the vignette was issued, a technical error was made in no more than three characters and/or a character is missing from the registration number, or the error concerns the country of registration or the vehicle category, the operator asks you to submit an application form, in person or through an authorised person. The sample form is on bgtoll.bg, under “Applications”.
